Things to do when the weather is bad

We%26#39;re going to Sveti Vlas next week and the forecast is not so good :(

Any tips or trips that we can do when the weather is bad?

|||

Hi Lienie

There are loads of trips you can do if the weather is not so good

Here are just a few of the trips you might like

Varna - Aladja monastery - Balchik .... Trip to the sea capital Varna-one of the most beautiful cities in Bulgaria. Tour of the city. Sightseeing of Aladja monastery-the most famous rock monastery on the Bulgarian seaside, which existed in the period of 12-14 century. Departure to Balchik, also called “The White Town“...

Valley of roses and Thracian kings.... Tour to the valley of the most sweet-smelling flower-the rose- and the Kingdom of the ancient Thracians. Visit to the ethnographic complex in the town of Kazanlak, tasting of rose products...

Sozopol-Ropotamo

Visit to one of the ancient towns in the country-the ancient Sozopol. Romantic walk in the old town, which has preserved the culture of several ancient civilizations. Boat trip in Ropotamo river-amazingly beautiful river with unique picturesque nature. Lunch. Free time for shopping in Bourgas.

Kotel - Zheravna

Day trip by bus

Departure for Zheravna with brief rest on the way. In Zheravna, tour of a museum house, the church and icon collection. Free time, lunch.

Departure for Kotel. Visit to the museum of old Kotel arts and crafts, Galatean%26#39;s school, with demonstration of folk musical instruments by students at the unique folk music school. Visit to the Ethnographic and natural History Museum. Return trip to Sunny Beach.

There are also many options for yacht trips (but obviously these are much better when the weather is good)

A jeep safari may be another option but again weather dependent.

If you prefer to be more independent there are plenty of buses that run frequently from Sunny Beach to places like Nessebar, Pommorie %26amp; Bourgas.

I hope this helps

Kind regards

Nikea Park

Hello all,

I%26#39;ll be traveling to Golden Sands at the end of May 2008 and have booked a week at the Nikea Park Hotel.

Does anybody, and I mean *anybody*, have experience with this place?

I%26#39;ve looked through German- and English-language websites about the place, but it seems there is nobody who%26#39;s written a review. The main reason for this is that the place is brand new, with a scheduled grand opening in May 2007 (though perhaps fully opened only as of Autumn 2007?).

From what I%26#39;ve pilfered from loads of various webpages, the Nikea Park is a mixed-function building, with many units up for sale on the second-home real estate market and others being administered by travel agencies (lastminute.com) on a weekly basis.

I know that the hotel is a bit away from the main drag of Golden Sands (which is not a bad thing for what we%26#39;re looking for); and I understand that we can use the beach at the Riveria Hotel on the south end of the Golden Sands Resort. I%26#39;ve seen loads of pictures of the various units in the building (at least of those on sale) and of the amenities in the hotel. But I%26#39;d love to hear if anyone%26#39;s got real first-hand experience.

Thanks!

|||

if you are using the beach at the riviera you should also be able to use the ammenities we re staying at the nympha in the riviera resort its not far from the action in golden sands but enough away for it to be quiet have you been to bulgaria before

|||

Thanks again for your reply, lalWales!

I%26#39;m looking forward to the trip even more now!

|||

there some marvelous restaurant in golden sands the irish bar at the hotel sofia and try the cocktail bar at the shipka hope you have a lovely time we cant wait to go june 20th

|||

Hello Mainz,

I need your advise. I have booked 10 days at the Nikea Park Hotel and I want to know if you were pleased by your holiday there.

I want to know how far is the hotel by the beach and how was the meal because we have HB included.

Thank you!

|||

Hi, we actually bought an appartment within Nikea Park, which is used by friends and family, and have visited twice since we purchased it at the end of last season.

Not being biased, and honest for you, but I was very impressed with the place - it was new last summer and when we went out there first of all we thought there may be some bits not finished, but that was certainly not the case and it has been built to a very high standard.

The rooms are very nice and if you have a sea view, then it is very pleasent as this view is over the top of the trees in the group and is uninterupted by other hotel buildings.

In terms of it%26#39;s location, it is about a 5-10 minute walk into the entrance to the Golden Sands resort, no more than that - if you walk down the road leading to it from the main road then it will take longer, althernatively there is a path which cuts the walk down.

It is outside of Golden Sands and therefore is quieter (ie, it is pieceful and you don%26#39;t here crowds etc) that you do in Golden Sands, but you are close enough to be right at the centre of the action if you want to.

I hope that helps, but if you need to know more, then let me know.

Hi Cristiana,

we%26#39;re back from a great and relaxing stay in Golden Sands.

Here%26#39;s what I%26#39;d say, briefly, about Hotel Nikea Park:

We found the staff to be helpful (especially the barmen and the shuttle bus drivers), though many of the women at the front desk were a little less than informed.

The hotel pool was not open for use when we arrived, though it seemed to be opened, of course, the day before we left. Our queries as to this went generally unheeded. The gorgeous pool bar was not running during our stay. In the course of our week there they only very slowly went about setting it up, though without any hint of interest in actually having it open for guests.

The hotel restaurant was, as far as we could tell, not open. I have no idea what this will mean for you if you%26#39;re booked HB. We went down on four occasions to try the restaurant--on nights when we just didn%26#39;t feel like trucking down the resort--but it was locked and lights were off.

The self-catering services are inadequate if you hope to do anything bolder than eat yoghurt and cheese and bread. There was nothing in the kitchen besides two glasses, two mugs, two plates and bowls, and two sets of cutlery. There was also a hot water kettle. But there was no sharp knife, no pots or pans, no can opening, no bottle opener, nada. So do not plan to be able to prepare anything in your room.

Our %26quot;sea-view%26quot; (which we booked), we were informed, was one even though we, on the first floor, could see nothing of the sea. Our request to be moved to a room with a proper sea view were answered with a %26quot;maybe in a few days%26quot; but with no action.

There was no cleaning service between our second day and our last day (over a seven-day stay), something that made washing up (which the cleaning lady helpfully did on those days when the room was cleaned) of the dishes without soap and without any sort of sponge or dishcloth a bit harder. The sheets were not changed until the day before our departure--a rather odd cleaning schedule decision, really.

The hotel is a bit further outside of the resort than is normally described. It takes about 12-15 minutes to get to the *beginning* of the resort and of the beach. As far as we could tell and as far as the poorly informed front-desk people could tell us, the beach at the Riveria was not free of charge to us. You would have to pay to use this beach. And therefore, you have to go the full distance to the resort beach. Which is, as I said, at least 12 minutes on foot--in flip-flops a bit longer down the sometimes tricky footpath through the woods. And to get to the start of the rash of restaurants in the center of the resort, you should expect a stroll of about 15 minutes at the least.

The %26quot;supermarket%26quot; in the hotel was not, as far as we could tell, restocked at all during the week we were there. This meant that water became increasingly difficult to come by. And we had to shlep water jugs from the resort back to the hotel.

The beach shuttle service as indicated on our booking--through holidayhotels.co.uk---was apparently news to the front-desk staff. Several attempts to tell us that there was no such service were countered on our part by a print-out of the hotel description from our booking service. The drivers of the shuttle buses were, once we finally established our right to said service, great, very friendly, and very flexible.

The bar in the hotel is pleasant, and drinks are fantastically cheap: half-litres of beer and glasses of wine running 2 lv = ca. 1 euro apiece. It%26#39;s a great place to wrap up the evening.

If you need to get a taxi transfer from the airport to the hotel, especially after hours, we%26#39;d recommend motoroads.com. It turned out that our transfer in both directions at the beginning and again this morning was with the same, very charming and very helpful taxi driver, who I presume received the commission from motoroads. We paid 27 euros each way (during day-time hours it should be 21 euros); it might be cheaper to contact the driver directly. I would definitely recommend him: Krasi at ++359 888 992 443.

On the whole, we found the state of the hotel to be very good, though the hallway on the ground floor to the rooms was horrible and several large blots on the carpet looked disturbingly like blood. The interior of the rooms is very new, which we were quite keen on. Our balcony was miniscule, though, and, as I said, there was certainly no view of the sea, not even if you got up on a chair on the balcony and then stood on your tippy-toes.

Being away from the madness of the resort--which during our week actually wasn%26#39;t too mad, though I suspect during the peak season, it%26#39;s jam-full--was quite nice. But sometimes it would have been great to have been closer to the hotel from the beach.

If you have any further questions about the hotel please let me know. I figure that since I could find only a single, German-language review of the place, the more information that%26#39;s available about it online, the better.

Enjoy your time in Bulgaria! Once you get the beach, it really is worth it!

Cheers

|||

Dear Chicago,

Thank you for your advise.

Your answer made me to change my mind. I canceled my tickets for Nikea Hotel and I have booked others for Edelweiss Hotel.

I wish to be better.

Hi,

I am one of the owners of an appartment in Nikea Park. It is a nice new complex and only about 15 mins walk from the main drag of Golden Sands, and about 250 metres to the beach too. What I would say about the place is that 5 stars in Bulgaria is more like 4 star in the UK. The biggest let down about the place is the staff, they are bloomin miserable although that has to be said of the locals in general. Otherwise the facilities are nice and if you get a forward facing appartment then you get amazing sea views, especially if you are in on of the appartments at the end of the building which has 180 degree uninterupted views of the ocean. My appartment is 307b but I have rented it for the summer. 308b is another good one, they are both just one bedroom, if you would like 2 bedrooms you need to go up one level. If possible don%26#39;t get an appartment below the 3rd floor, just because the tree line may hinder your view of the ocean.

Hope this helps.

Paul.

|||

Hi all!

I%26#39;m one of the owners of appartments at Nikea Park Hotel. Is anybody aware of the water supply problem inside the building? May be somebody knows the solution? Is anybody has faced other difficulties living there?

sunny beach

Hi never visited bulgaria booked up to go next summer at the rose village apartments any advice would be helpful got 2 children one 10 and one 15 jan

|||

Hi Jan,

I know nothing about the Rose Village Apartments but I can tell you that Sunny Beach is a great place for families..... It has miles of beautiful sandy beaches with safe swimming for the children..... There are also 2 water parks (1 in Sunny Beach %26amp; the other just outside Nessebur)........ There are many trips that can be booked localy including yacht trips %26amp; jeep safaris which your children may enjoy.... For further advice, I would suggest you bumped up your post in a couple of weeks when the 2 very knowledgable destination experts return from their holidays.

Kind regards

Meg x x x

|||

thanks for info great help jan

|||

hi jan

the waterpark in nessabar is the best the kids had a ball even the big kids and even the food is not dear like most these places and lovely places to sun bathe for the adults and the kids we had loved kfc and it wasnt too expensive either the were not impressed with mc donalds

|||

Hi Jan,

I can%26#39;t comment on the Nessebur waterpark as we didn%26#39;t go to that one but the one in sunny Beach was also great for both kids and adults....Like the previous poster said about the Nessebur waterpark, food and drink was also very reasonable at this park too.....Which ever one you should choose, they both offer free transport to and from the parks.... MD%26#39;s should be avoided if possible as it it is well over priced and tastes no better than it does here!!! For a cheap lunch time snack, there are plenty of stalls where you can get great value jacket potaoes or pizza slices.

Kind regards

Ten Days In Sunny Beach!!

First time to SB Myself , my wife, and two 16 year old Girls..

Delayed Leaving Dublin for 3 hours, got into Bourgas at 22.45 local time, the pre arranged taxi was waiting for us, no problems and drove us into the resort.

Had no Levs as the airport were only giving 160 to the Euro, got them changed on flower Street @ 1,92.

hotel was magnificent, 1 bed roomed apartment in the Royal beach Barcelo, 2 mins from the beach, and 2 mins from the action.

Water Parks, free bus from the main street towards Nessebar I think it was 15 Lev for the day and half price after 3 oclock, again good fun

Toonman

|||

glad you had a good time we flying out on monday and cant wait it be our first time and with toonman and welsh lady advice i cant wait

|||

Hi was the Barcelo as nice as it looks cos we are considering it for next year with our two girls age 2 and 9 as we have been to Sunny Beach this year for our first visit and loved it but the hotel was just a bit of a let down so wanted to make sure it was a good one next time. Did you book as a package holiday or was it cheaper to book it seperate.

|||

The Hotel actually made our holiday, its less than a two minute walk to the beach, or the Strip, right next door to KFC,and Subway, its clean, has 3 swimming pools, great food, and its Very Safe and secure, and its very quite at night time, you hear nothing, we will be going back.

I booked it separately from the flights, and got a good deal, its a one bed roomed apartment, ideal for you with 2 kids, send an email to Tony, tell him Des recommended his place.

holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/…80195

Enjoy!!!

|||

I agree I couldn%26#39;t fault the Barcelo in any way and its on the doorstep to everything you could possibly need.

train #59 Moscow---Sofia

Has anyone taken this train from Chernivtsi to Suchava? Do you know the time schedule and cost

|||

That train leaves from Chernivtsi at 7.05AM and gets to Suceava around 12.20 noon; a second class ticket costs about 9-10 euros.

If you%26#39;re only going from Chernivtsi to Suceava it%26#39;s better to use minibuses, they%26#39;re a lot faster: it%26#39;s 2 hours by minibus and more than 5 hours by train (a lot of time is spent at the border while the train has its bogies changed).

|||

Thank you for your reply. Would you happen to know where we can catch a mini bus? There will be 7 of us.

|||

I should mention - our final destination is Cluj. Can you get a mini bus from Chernivtsi to Cluj?

|||

Don%26#39;t know exactly where they leave from, just ask around after you get to Chernivtsi, many people use these minibuses (or try asking in the Ukraine section of this forum).

There aren%26#39;t any minibuses from Chernivtsi to Cluj as far as I know. To get to Cluj first you%26#39;ll have to go to Suceava and from there either take a train (about 5-6 direct trains to Cluj daily, trip takes 6-7 hours and prices start at €11) or fly with the low cost airline BlueAir (flight takes ~50 minutes, costs about €25 if booked in advance).

|||

Thank you. Most helpful!

|||

My wife and son need to catch a train from Chernivtsi to Brasov. Does the Moscow-Sofia #59 go through Brasov or will they have to change trains? Is there a mini or regular bus for Brasov from Chernivtsi? Thanks

Bansko Private Ski Lesson

Hi,

Please could someone give me some advise on where to go to, to prebook private skiing lessons. I will be needing a beginner and intermidate level.

any help would be appreciated.

|||

You need to pre book your ski school stuff. I am going in January and have booked everything through Neilson Holidays. This can be done on line. I got a great deal, ski school 4 hours a day for 6 days, they group people together depending on their ability. Also, skis boots etc and lift passes for about 140 GBP. Try to get an all inclusive package, it works out much cheaper than buying it all seperately.

|||

thanks, we%26#39;ve booked the holiday already with Neilson infact for january aswell and we have got the ski school included. We really want private lessons but might just keep with the ski school now! cant decide.

|||

Hello! I can recommend David from Method Ski School - he is english and trained in the US and is excellent for first timers or intermediate. Also great with kids!

Good luck and have fun!

Just back from half term skiing in Bansko

Overall a good week away, but some tips for anyone going at Easter (school holiday period). This is not all doom and gloom, just be prepared.

we travelled with Nielson on a full package.. hotel Perun (see separate review), Ski and boot hire, lessons at Ullen ski school.

After arriving at midnight and going straight to bed we were up early to get to the kit collection point. Free bus shuttle from hotel drops you at the huge warehouse-size ski depot. There was a major queue outside which also snaked around the inside and it took us 3 hours to get through it. There is no organisation here and people seem to be standing around doing nothing. Nielson rep was in and out and could do nothing to improve the situation. It was soon clear that we would miss the start of our lessons and was assured that our lessons would start when we got there.

After collecting skis and boots and putting boots on, we went outside to find ski school guys. Although there were hundreds in the Ullen ski school jackets, it took a while to find out where to report to. There was absolutely no organisation and thousands of people milling around not knowing what to do or where to go. We were eventually told to take the Gondola up to the top and ask someone else. We then realised that there was an equally large queue for the Gondola.

At about dinner time we arrived at the top gondola station and were asked to wait for an instructor to be appointed...... 20 minutes and a couple of irritated exchanges later we were assigned to an instructor to start our lessons. (Some guests in the hotel reported they waited for an instructor for 2 hours and didn%26#39;t put skis on until mid afternoon).

This was our first skiing holiday and we were all stressed and very upset by this time.

Following our lesson which was relatively good, we came down in the gondola and took our skis and boots back to the hotel so we wouldn%26#39;t have to go to the depot again. The queue for the Gondola remained huge all week.

Learning points...

Hire your skis and boots at the hotel if you can. We didn%26#39;t realise this was an option. If you can%26#39;t, then be early and make sure you have the right paperwork.

Be prepared for chaos...take a bottle of water and snacks for the queue.

There is only one Gondola up the mountain - if the weather is bad (windy) nobody skis. A Taxi is possible, but is costly - still might be worth investigation if you need to.

There is always a queue unless you are up very early to be at the Gondola station by 8:00am - to do this we had to miss breakfast every day.

If you don%26#39;t have a morning lesson, you should sleep in, get breakfast, go for a swim, then go to gondola after 11:00 and ski all afternoon. No queues an experience that is something more like a holiday. somethin

|||

Caz or is it Baz? I really do sympathise with this first introduction to skiing it really is not like this in most places and Neilson should be not advertising this place as good for beginners, it clearly is not and we had a torrid time here a few years ago.

Just got back last night from Niederau in Austria, stayed in a hotel 30 yds from the lifts...we also avoided the ski and boot faff by emailing the hotel our requirements and the ski hire shop (part of the same hotel) opening up a bit earlier through a secret door for residents.

Ski school one of the best in Europe starts at 10 and by half past everyone was in a group.

Great breakfasts and meals, had a fabulous weeks skiing, 23 degrees on the mountain. A great fun, stress free environment in which to improve the skiing.......give Austria a go next time, Bansko might be cheap but for everything else you can keep it........

In talking to other more experienced skiiers, they all thought the skiing in Bansko was very good and returned each year despite it%26#39;s problems. The morale of the story is don%26#39;t go at half term. I am sure the experience would be completely different without the queues. As stated here before, the infrastructure in Bansko does not yet support the many thousands of people now flocking there at busy periods. Without another Gondola I can%26#39;t see this getting any better any time soon.

|||

Hi Caznbaz, we were also there last week. We ski 3/4 weeks a year mainly in Italy sometimes France. Your/our expriences in Bansko are unacceptable. The queues are appalling and only likely to get worse. The apartment blocks are being built with no regulation and control. If new development stopped today and those being built completed, there would be 30,000 beds in Bansko with one Gondola. The Ulen Ski School instructors were strikingly average skiers themselves. I%26#39;d imagine the ownership of a blue/yellow jacket was the only qualification required. The pistes were very crowded as there is only 70k%26#39;s. Food prices on the mountain were more expensive than Italy, in fact nothing was cheap. The town is fuelled by greed. It%26#39;s a dirty, ugly building site. Try the Dolomites next time, you%26#39;ll love it.

|||

it really surprises me when people go skiing at half-term in an underdeveloped resort and then get upset when it doesn%26#39;t stack up to established European resorts.

This is why it is cheap (unles syou go through one of the rip-off package tours).

It is not organised - it%26#39;s Bulgaria. Customer service and organisation has not arrived yet.

I agree that if you are a beginner, then you will struggle - it is not the place for a first-time ski holiday.

If you are an experienced skiier (or border) self-sufficient and not wanting lessons each day, then it is great. If you have your own skis, or are not tied to a particular hire shop, then you can avoid the chaos at the Gondola hire shop or the Warehouse. Avoid the gondola between 09:00 and 10:00 and avoid the beginner area at Bunderisha Polyana and you will be fine.

New year, Half term and Easter are going to be busy times for any ski resort - unfortunately Bansko is not very good at ramping up to meet the demand.

There are plans for a second Gondola on the other side of the river - so this will alleviate the problems somewhat.

|||

With the greatest respect we cant all just up and go when we feel like it and have several weeks skiing. I am tied to school holidays as a teacher, and after all if you take out xmas, new year, half term and easter there are actually very few weeks left.

I mentioned earlier that the advertisers should avoid selling this as a beginners holiday. If this had been my first ski holiday here I would not have gone again...thank goodness it wasnt.

Im sure they will plan on setting up a new Gondola but they need to pay the millions back they borrowed to be able to afford this one first.

For me actually although the skiing wasnt good the main things I disliked about Bansko were the food, uuuuuugh, the rudeness or simply not caring attitude of a lot of the locals.

This place clearly does have its market....young men like yourself who dont care too much about the food, the services or getting up on the mountain in time for ski school, who just enjoy a bit of nightlife where your pound goes further and you dont have to drag kids along. We are not all in this position however, I would think this place wholly unsuitable for children.....and as for 40 something middle aged housewives with a bit of life left in them, well I just like a bit of comfort....LOL

|||

I know that not everyone is able to choose their holidays, particularly those who work in schools, but as a result, wherever you go is always going to be busier than usual. Bansko, due to the general disorganisation of the staff and the apparent %26quot;don%26#39;t care%26quot; attiude suffers more so than more established resorts when a whole lot of people descend on the place - like at new year, half term and easter.

In these periods it is always going to be a nightmare. Bansko is what it is, and that is a developing resort in a developing country. It could become a great ski resort, it could become a huge disaster, we will not know for a number of years - but certainly at the moment we agree that it is not a beginners resort for a first time skiing holiday - particularly if you are tied in to a ski package at the rental places in or right next to the gondola, where they seem the most disorganised/disinterested. There are other shops nearby that are better.

Really you need to be either self-sufficient in knowing what you want and how to arrange it in terms of private lessons and own skis etc (or hire elsewhere)

As for a new gondola, my understanding is that it is a couple of years away, rather than a future plan. Also - in relation to the comment above about the unregulated building work - by Bulgarian standards it is pretty well controlled - maximum height to buildings, attractive alpine designs only and no more new applications for a few years until the infrastructure catches up. If you want to see uncontrolled building work, look at Sunny Beach!

I%26#39;m surprised that you didn%26#39;t like the food - what in particular was bad? - I tried a few local mehinas, as well as the English places and thought it was quite nice (and I am fussy about food).

Contary to what you might think, I do care about what I eat, and where I stay and the levels of comfort - and to be honest, on the food and hotel stakes, I have been quite happy, the building site side of things aside, the hotels I have stayed in have been well built, clean, and comfortable. Oh, and most days, even after a late start, I was still up the mountain before the ski schools started.

My frustration with a lot of people who slate Bansko is that they go there without doing any research on the place i.e what to expect, other than what a travel agent has told them (whilst trying to sell them a holiday - hmmm). I%26#39;m not saying you are like this, but a number of the people I met on the sloppes and in the town certainly were, and then they were moaning because it was not like Val D%26#39;isere.

OK, it might not be the best resort for Children and families, in which case you will likely be better spending a bit more money and going somewhere else next time, but i did see a number of Children on the slopes when I was there, couples and families too. They all seemed fine. But then again, it was not the half term holidays, and I am sorry if this is the only time you can go, but it is not the best time to go, and to be honest, aren%26#39;t most places much busier at half term? Although the effect and problems are magnified in Bansko due to the problems mentioned above.

PS - It%26#39;s nice to still be considered young!

|||

We have an apartment in Bansko (it%26#39;s a long story why)and see very few merits in Bansko as a ski resort. Essentially, it is not cheap. This is fundemental to the whole Balkan skiing experience. It%26#39;s a long, tiring journey to get there, the transfer was worrying at times. The town is a huge, dirty building site. The skiing infrastructure is struggling to cope at present. This will get much, much worse as the 30,000 bedrooms currently under construction complete. The second Gondola WILL NOT arrive for years. The Bulgarians promise the earth, but deliver little. There are only 70k%26#39;s of skiing, another Gonadola will only move the problem further up the mountain. Food/ drink is now as expensive, or more so, than Italy and parts of France. The Bulgrians can be blunt and obtuse. There is definitely a %26#39;rip-off%26#39; culture which, I was told (by a Bulgarian)is a throw-back to the communist regime.

|||

Heldfordway - I have seen your posts on a number of other forums - consistantly negative. Fine, that is your experience, and perhaps purchasing in Predela 1 was a mistake for you.

You are entitled to your opinions, and you evidently don%26#39;t like Bansko. Again, this is your choice. I disagree with you, based on my experiences - I have now been there 5 times, and have also skied all over Europe, and I think that bansko as a budget ski resort is fine. Prices are definately NOT as expensive as other resorts, and as I said above, this is an Eastern European country that is undergoing massive development, they need to catch up so I bear this in mind when reviewing things.

If it is still the same in 5 years, then I will probarbly think differently - but as it stands at the moment, it is looking and getting better every time I go there - so I am optimistic for the place.

If you have had such a bad experience as your forum posts indicate, then the best thing you can do is sell up and get out - you may think that you are helping, but looking at your other posts, you just seem to be annoying people. Make your point and leave it at that. On that basis, why don%26#39;t you tell us the details of why you hate Bansko, concisely and clearly with examples so that we can draw our own conclusions from them?

|||

Macummi seems to be talking sense here.

I have not skied for 25 years but am travelling with my family at Easter. The trip was arranged by the local ski club which has strong links to the primary school one of children go to. Frankly I was looking forward to it but after reading all the negative posts I have changed my mind. To be fair to the organisers we were told it would be basic and the food wasn%26#39;t good. The only thing I am worried about is long queues at the gondola. Anything more than 1 hour will be depressing.

The rest I will just keep an open mind about. After all we went to Eurodisney a few years ago and had to wait two hours at least for most rides and they were rubbish!

Help

I am going to Sunny Beach with my family on the 13th September. There is 11 of us and we are booked into the pomorie (before we read all the reviews). Is it as bad as they say as this is our first time going to bulgaria and because of all the reviews on trip advisor we are all dreading it :(

|||

hi there

dont know about that hotel but if its that bad ask your rep to change you to somewhere else anyway you will only be sleeping there there is a lovely beach there and lots to do you will enjoy it lots of good bars and places to eat if you have any questions just ask but dont be afraid to get a change if it is bad we have done this on one of our hols

|||

hi there ! if your all inclusive take some cash for eating out !!! if its B%26amp;B just use the place as a base and you%26#39;ll be ok . if you go with an open mind its nae that bad

|||

HI,

I am flying from Glasgow 13th Sept-prob same flight as you so may see you at the airport. We go to SB in June for 2 wks then I go on my own in Sept for 1 wk. Always had great hols in SB %26amp; made a few friends with people who work in the resort. After the 2nd week in Sept it gets a bit quieter %26amp; some places will be closing down,but still loads of things open.The weather can be very mixed as well,so take some warm clothes for the evenings.Have not stayed in your hotel so can%26#39;t comment.Most people who complain about AI seem to have issues with the food,so be prepared to do some eating out if the hotel food is not to your taste.The free drinks in AI hotels tend to be local beers wines %26amp; spirits,imported brands have to be paid for.I like Bulgarian beer so I%26#39;m ok lol.

Hope you have a fantastic holiday %26amp; hope the sun shines for all of us.If you have any questions just email me 7 I will try to help.

Regards.

Moira.

That is why i am worried people are saying that there rooms are getting broke in too and that the staff are in on it cos the doors are not damaged (but cos they have nt actually caught them they cant prove it)they are also sayin tht while in there rooms morning noon or night the doors where getin tryed. Like you say if this does happen a do hope tht if me and my family are nt happy we do get moved. I have heard tht bulgaria is a lovely place thts why we are goin there its the HOTEL tht is a worry to me and my family.

|||

Hi - you can always wander into Bourgas - which has a lovelylong beach, nice sea park and lots of great restuarants and a good bus service to the resorts. Or you could go up to Varna. Bulgarian towns are very different to the resorts - food and drink about half the price (?). If the hotel is that bad suggest you request upgrade before you go and take out good insurance. I have necer had any trouble in Bulgaria - but be careful of cabs and always ask them to put it on the meter.

The other thing you could do is rent a couple of flats nearby before you go - cheap as chips! And then if the hotel is rubbish just use it now and then.

Holiday Inn Sofia - Questions

Hi,

I am considering a visit to Sofia for a long weekend and noticed I may be able to get a decent rate at the Holiday Inn Sofia.

Having read the hotel reviews, I am a bit undecided - most say that it is outside the city by some distance. I would like to know how accessible the location is in general (we do not drive so it will be public transport or taxis) and if there are any restaurants/stores/supermarkets in the area around the hotel.

What type of travel times will be required from the hotel to the city centre and hotel to the airport? And any estimates of the cost of taking a taxi from this hotel to central Sofia?

Many thanks in advance for any answers!

|||

Holiday Inn is more like a business hotel because it is located in the Business Park of the city.

It is far from the centre - 12 km and usually there are many traffic jams in this area. Public transport is not ok. You have to change buses. Taxi would be around 7-10 EUR. There are many restaurants in the area and there is a supermarket.

Which beach is good in Bulgaria to meet locals?

I love the bulgarian culture and would like to travel there for one week and meet some young people. Where do you guys suggest me to go?

|||

Beaches are getting empty, so I don%26#39;t think you will have the chance to meet locals there.

|||

Try staying in a town like Varna or Bourgas - both have beaches and seaside parks. Or you could travel around on busses and trains always good for a chat to the locals. Avoid the main holiday resorts if you want tme meet Bulgarians

sun village apartments... my review

hi all, just back 2day from sunny beach, the sun village was a lovely place to stay and we really enjoyed it there, the apartment we had was ground floor, so straight on the balcony onto a sun lounger then in the pool, perfect, as for sunny beach it wasnt really our cup of tea to be honest, the very long street from our apartment to the centre was awful, the beggers were a nitemare, a little lad about 6ish was runnin after u all the time tryin to take yr food of u and yr jewellry u had to b very firm with him, a woman wud b sat under a tree with a baby beggin for money, they were sat there amongst dead cats, it was disgusting, and we hated having to walk down that street,

the centre was ok but the nitelife was more for 18 to 25yr olds

the beach was lovely

nessebar was lovely aswell

we went to nessabar water park and we thought it was much better than the action water park

the food was very good, i had a few shopska salads they r a must have, and i also had the kavarma, it was very nice aswell but dont roam to far nx mornin for a while.......

dont get me wrong we did enjoy our time there, but we wouldnt b going again.... theres a sort of wobbly pier on the beach that moves with the waves, plz b carful as my hubby grazed his leg quite badly , as he jumped of he got snagged on it , nails stickin out of it, we enjoyed the sea star on the front nx to the bungee catapult best, with djanny, and fara a close second

Should I go to Sunny beach in September?Advice appreciated!

Hi.

Me and boyf are thinking of going to Sunny beach 7th Sep 2008 for 2 weeks. I was not going too due to all the stories about prostitutes/not being able to leave ur bag on beach whilst going 4 swim/beggers, but I think we should try it.Are they really such a big problem?Can anyone suggest preferably a 4* hotel thats nice and not too far from centre?I have seen Laguna park,Fiesta beach which look ok.

What is the best place to get our levs before we go?Is Bulgaria still 60p a pint etc?

Does anyone know if it will be hot on the dates we r going?

Oh sorry for all the questions but I will be very grateful for all your help and if you need any help on Kos,Marmaris and a few other places I have been I will be happy to advise you xxx

|||

Hi Gemma, I hardly think you and your boyfriend are going to be bothered by prostitutes if you are out as a couple.

Best place to buy lev from before you go is probably either M%26amp;S or the Post Office. Mind you it is a better rate in the resort banks.

The time you are going is usually fine, still mid to high 20%26#39;s, occasional thunderstorm, bit nippy at night sometimes. I always go 1st 2 weeks in Sept and have only had one so, so year and that was last year( still came back with a tan though )

Yes you can still get a pint of beer for 1 lev ( 42p ), however, you need to get away from the beachside bars for this. They will charge 3-4 lev a pint compared to Billies Bistro, Condor, Djanny%26#39;s Fara etc all up beside the market.

Clubs are obviously around the 4 lev mark.

As for hotels, for me the best is the Iberostar Sunny Beach resort Hotel, 4* and next to the beach yet only 2 minutes to the resort centre ( Thomas Cook, Balkan ) The Grand Hotel Oasis is also 4* but you can book B%26amp;B there which is ideal for SB as it is very cheap to eat out and you then won%26#39;t have to worry about poor hotel food. ( Food in Iberostar is very good though )

Others will give their opinion but why not look under hotel review section which list the hotels in order of popularity by forum members.

|||

We have booked September to hotel Globus cant wait yayyyyy

|||

i have lived in sunny beach for 2yrs now there are not many prostitutes operating here due to deppression and police best place for eating is dejannys downby markets advice dont trust bulgarians be careful of pickpockets gipseys esspecially getting on buses dont ever change money in street no matter what story they spin u use banks only be aware that atms use will be charged at approx 2 pounds per transaction this can add up best rates of exchange are here but shop arround barter with taxis as they r desporate for work and if not happy with price move on to another one and always ask price first bougas airport can be45 to 70 or very cheeky 90 lev if u walk out of airport uwill see a bus stop on other side of island they run approx 20 mins and cost 5 lev 2 lev to pound aprox bus whole length of sunny beach right to nessebar 1 lev hope this all helps if u need any more advice whilst here u can call me 00359877959204 david

Hi,

I have been to Sunny beach for 2 years running and are about to go there on the 12th for 2 weeks. The weather out there at this time of year is hot, but can be prone to heavy rain. I did come back with a great tan. I had one incident with a young gypsy during the day, walking about, he was asking for money, didnt get any. My advice is to keep to the main streets, i wouldnt leave my bag on the beach, but really would you leave it anywhere? I wouldnt leave it anywhere in this country. So just take the same safe precautions as you would do anywhere else. I didnt see any prostitutes, im sure there will be as others have seen them, but they are in any town, so again just be aware. You hear stories from tourists who visit other places abroad, good and bad experiences.Im about to have my third visit, and to enjoy. Hope you do too.

|||

We%26#39;ve just booked to go to Sunny Beach from 11th September for 2 weeks and I was starting to worry about bad weather but feel so much better after reading these reviews. Many thanks.

Staying at Helena Sands and looking forward to checking out the Spa and the bars in the resort!

|||

Hi Sarah

Staying at the helena, you have nothing to worry about even if the weather is bad. Its a simply amazing hotel, for my money the best in Sunny Beach. If the weather is bad you can still use the indoor pool, solarium, treatment rooms and have a glass or 3 at either of the lobby bars. Hope you have a fab time

|||

Just returned yesterday and the weather was fabulous. However, it absolutely tipped it down when we were leaving but the locals said that was the bad day and things would pick up again.

Had a fabulous time, never saw a prostitute, mugging and even the bike taxis seem to have learnt their lesson offering reasonable prices.

Condor bar is excellent for drinks, cheap, good measures ( not weak stuff ) and service.

Grand Sunny Beach Hotel?

Hi Guys we are jetting off 14/09/09 cant wait... just wonder if anyone could tell me where we can get to the market from grand sunny beach hotel? is it far etc and what is the market like for fake handbags any good? any advice would be appreciated thanks x

|||

Your hotel is virtually on the beach promenade, Facing the sea, turn right walk to the main street where the Hotel Kuban is and just walk to the traffic lights and this is the market area. You will find good fakes in virtually everything you see( except perfumes/cigarettes ) Should take you no more than 10 minutes.

Recommend any restaurants that serve good local dishes?

Hi

I would like to sample some traditional Bulgarian dishes some evenings- any places that you could particularly recommend?

|||

Lauralou

You will find so many restaurants serving Bulgarian cuisine.

My personal favourites in Sunny Beach are where the local Bulgarians eat...all near the market area, Condor, Iris, Kokiche and Djannys. Beacause the locals use these restaurants the prices are lower as well.

|||

We recall 4 years ago that there was a good restaurant called %26quot;Captain.....%26quot; , it had wooden benches %26amp; tables %26amp; was very popular. It was down by an area which I think had a bucking bronco machine, possibly near a hotel called Pomorie.

Do you know it %26amp; is it still there?

|||

Sorry cant help. There was a restaurant opposite the Hotel Pomorie where the staff wore Sailor suits???

|||

There was a nice restaurant just next to the Grand Hotel Oasis, past the Barcelo Royal Beach on artist street.( Not sure of name )

It has a small watermill running and a open spit with suckling pigs etc being cooked. Had a beautiful Chicken Kavarma there ( A stew with vegetables/potato%26#39;s )

Toonman

|||

@ WelshLadyNorthWales...yes, I%26#39;m sure thats the one. They used to serve steak cooked with pears, my hubby absoultly loved it and was looking forward to going back....Is it still there?

|||

It was still there last year. So who knows?

|||

just back billys bisstro think thats the 1 try roast lamb or beef strog vg 14 lev 2 parts to restrant same place

|||

No I think the one you are talking about is actually called the Watermill..I passed by there the other night..looked good but a bit empty. Bistro Billy is nice - we had pig from the spit there on Wednesday..a little pricey but worth it!

|||

Had a lovely meal upstairs in the lighthouse at Far..A

Service was also excellent.

reception area royal bay

Hi, anybody got photos of reception area in royal bay that can be posted on trip advisor please.

|||

go there next weekend so hope to comply

|||

that will be brill. i only took one near to where the plants are and i need a more panoramic view of the area. you will have fab time. be careful of floors they are very slippery - being washed all the time. if you need any info before you go let me know, unless you want to find out for yourself, because we all have different ideas what makes a holiday don%26#39;t we. my hubby broke his shoulder (sober!!!) four days into the holiday in may but we stayed for the two weeks

|||

Hi - just a couple of questions: do they have pool towels also is sun oil expensive ? Looking forward to it now as last six or so reviews are good - will send the photos on return Paul

|||

hope im not too late. had problem with bwereavement in family. i didnt use beach area but think most people used their own towels andnthey can be bought in shop for approx £10. otherwise i dont think there will be problem using hotel towels which are in abundance in bathroom. sun oil was a bit cheaper than here. if you go to sunny beach for shopping the %26quot;right hand%26quot; side leading to the resort when you get off the bus is cheaper than side nearest the sea. some people,do pester you and we were approached by someone who wanted to change money - dont. we were warned of this. there is a nice friendly bar to left of market area cheap lager 1.5 levs for 1/2 litre. british themed pubs lot dearer (as one would expect). have a lovely time. we would go back and prob stay self catering instead of all inclusive. enjoy your trip.

|||

Hi Paul, did you enjoy royal bay? did you have to develop photos of reception area to send to m - irene (blue john charles).

|||

Have you an email as I am not too sure how to attach photos

yavor palace hotel

my partner and i are off to yavor palace on 25.09.09

this is our first holiday in 6 years (due to financial probs) and im starting to dread it already. ive read some really bad reviews on the hotel and cant believe weve chosen somewhere with really bad reviews.

we always used to holiday in Greece but the tour operator advised me Bulgaria is much cheaper and just as nice. Does anyone have anything good to say about Yavor Palace?

we are a 40 year old couple who are looking forward to sun, sea and a relaxing beach holiday (with the odd drink thrown in for fun)

|||

sorry nothing good to say about this place im just home from it this morning.

my family plus another 16 familys all got our safes broke into which are in reception area and all happened with in the last week we were there plus we are all british it was sterling they seemed to be after and my sons i pod went also plus they were all opened by a key so had to be inside job. plus a girls room got broke into all her clothes were took she only had her bikin and beach skirt left this also was done by a key sorry for such a bad review butjust watch yourselves sunny beach its self is lovely but this has put me off going back.

|||

Hi,

I%26#39;m sorry to sound negative %26amp; I don%26#39;t normally have a bad word to say about Sunny Beach but is there anyway you could change hotels or even destination? I don%26#39;t know anything about The Yavour Palace but I am concerned that you are going so late in the season when everything is starting to wind down and the weather may not be at its best!!! I went to Golden Sands a few years ago (Mid September) and we had more rainy days then we did sunny ones.

Although I totaly agree with what the travel agent told you about Bulgaria being much cheaper and just as nice as Greece I do think they should have warned you that the summer season is not as long as it is in Greece.

Kind regards

Meg x x x

|||

thanks for the update guys

god, now im really dreading it. we were hoping to have a relaxing holiday but it doesnt seem like the weather is gonna be too good. Do you think i would be better off keeping my valuables in my room, rather than the hotel safe?

maybe i will just carry them around with me everywhere i go...hell..i think i will drag my suitcase around with me everywhere i go...lol

i dont think i will be able to change hotels at this late stage without having to pay an extortionate rip off fee. after reading the yavor palace reviews last week about some rooms overlooking the exotic bar, i went to the travel agents to ask for a pool view. they wanted me to pay £58.00! when i got home and studied my original booking form i found i already had a pool facing room!!!

im sorry to hear you guys had a bad experience, maybe i will have to get drunk to blot it all out...lol

|||

Hi,we are booked in the Yavor too.Going on 21st with our 4 year old grandson %26amp; dreading it also!!!!I printed out some of the reviews %26amp; took them to our First Choice Travel shop,who were unhelpful to say the least.We were told that we would have to pay £35 each for admin costs plus the price difference for which ever hotel we chose.It worked out at £285 extra.!!!!We have been to Bulgaria twice before %26amp; whilst our hotels were cheap n cheerful,they were fine re.safes etc.Am really at a loss as to what to do as we have a tight budget.I can only suggest kicking up a fuss when we arrive.though it isnt the way we want to go when we are on hols!!!We plan on using our debit card to draw cash as we need it %26amp; only carry small amounts with us.Our passports (I assume)will be kept by the hotel as that was our experience of other visits,%26amp; we will carry our camera with us.I wont take Ipod or good jewellery.Cant think of what else to do %26amp; will cross fingers that we all have a pleasant incident free holiday.Cheers Joan

Hi,

We stayed in the Yavour Palace in June and didn%26#39;t have any problems.

We didn%26#39;t use the hotel safe. Used the local ATM whenever we needed cash, so we didn%26#39;t need to keep a lot of money in the room. Didn%26#39;t take any %26#39;good%26#39; jewelery and camera was always with me. My daughter%26#39;s DS was the only %26#39;valuable%26#39; that we left in the room.

The hotel is basic but the rooms were cleaned everyday. (We made friends with the cleaning lady - learnt a few words of Bulgarian - it really helped)

The hotel food is OK - nothing special but it%26#39;s edible. The entertainment is just a kareoke, but there%26#39;s plenty to do near the hotel.

It%26#39;s not so cheap around the hotel but if you take a wander a bit further from the centre you will find many places with good food and the 1 lev beer. Our personal favourite was the Karma bar which is near the Meridian hotel. (Just ask if you want directions)

You will always get some unscrupulous people wherever you stay, so I hope that the hotel has tightened up it%26#39;s security.

There%26#39;s not a lot you can do about the weather, just cross your fingers! It could be glorious.

Hope you have a good time.

thanks joan and jan

ive saved up my spending money as cash and knowing how much my bank dislike me right now i doubt they would let me withdraw money from the atm! my friend says i should take travellers cheques cos if they are stolen, its easy enough to replace them?

im hoping that as were booked to go so late in the season, there will be lots of bored staff hanging around to keep their eyes on the safes!!!

weve only paid for the breakfast in the hotel so hopefully weather permitting we will be on the beach all day, hit a couple of bars at night time and be too sloshed at bedtime to realise were staying in %26quot;fawlty towers%26quot;.

ive paid extra to have a late check out room as we have a nighttime return flight.

i guess the holiday is what you make it, as its been a number of years since my last holiday, im gonna try to have a great time...roll on Bulgaria, here we come!

|||

Hi kmg,Think about getting a pre-paid debit card.I use one for my hols,%26amp; its really ok.Mine is a Maestro as that is accepted world wide,though Mastercard is also an option.That would save you carrying all your cash around.I think mine took just over a week to process %26amp; Ive used it for 5 years now.Its another option to consider.Cheers Joan

|||

hi kmg

please dont take all cash with you please consider one of those cards as i really do think was inside job at hotel so bored staff will just help themselves hope you have a good holiday.

Just Back

Was in sunny beach for 3 weeks, was meant to be my own apartment, but no it wasn%26#39;t ready, so the developers put us up in Bravo 1 it was ok, clean and basic.

My daughter and 2 friends joined us after a week (all 18) they had a ball out every night until 5 or 6 in the morning sleeping all day, exhausted me just watching them get ready, but that is me getting old!!

They are definately going back next year and would love to get a job there!

The joined up with a crowd called the party crew who operate out of revelution or disco orange, they arrange entertainment every night, pub crawls, foam parties etc for a smal charge, the girls thought it was brilliant and they made so many friends.

For my husband, my 13 year old son and niece 12years, it was a bit quieter, we ate mostly in the condor which was great all the times we were there, there was a small shack type place just behind the Polyusi Hotel and about 100 metres up the road, which was great for burgers etc and then there was another further up that was also goodm had not a problem with food at all.

For all our tours we used Lucky Tours, the girl in there was so pleasant and really went out of her way with us they are opposite the Excelsior Hotel.

We had a great time the weather was fantastic every day all day, I tried to find the Corner pub (the one that serves food) the only one I found was opposite the Kuban opstairs night club sort of place maybe someone would let me know.

Overall we all had a great time and can%26#39;t wait to next year.

|||

glad you had good time we were in SB in May/ June this year for the first time and really enjoyed it, you have to get out of SB to find the real Bulgaria but its amazing once you do, try Sozopol and Bourgas(although wasnt keen on Bourgas). The Corner Pub you mention is at the south end of SB near the Meridien Hotel it was our second home while we aere there the food is good and cheap just like the beer and the staff and people are really friendly.

|||

Welcome back and so glad you had a good time despite the setback over the apartment.

Toonman

Morning All,

just booked 2 weeks at the Majestic Hotel, Sunny Beach. This will be our first time in Bulgaria and wondered if there were any tips that we should know about or anything we should be aware of.

Also is there anything that we should visit whilst there or any trips that we should take ?

Weather looks a bit iffy at the moment so hoping that it will improve soon ;-)

Many thanks

Sunny Beach to Istabnul

Flying out tonight ot Sunny Beach and wondered if anyone had done the trip to Istanbul ? It looks like a long journey , is it worth it and how long does it take ?

thanks

Darren

|||

Hi Daz,we,ve done this trip twice as Istanbul is amazing.The journey is very long Im afraid,but there are stops for food %26amp; toilets.The toilets are very basic %26amp; not too salubrious,%26amp; there are long queues at the Turkish border to have your passport stamped.The hotel we stayed in was basic too,but clean %26amp; comfy %26amp; food was included in the price.I dont think I would do it again to be honest,but I will never forget the Blue Mosque %26amp; the river trip.I want to go back to Istanbul but I think the next time Id pay the extra money to fly.It was certainly an experience %26amp; we were glad we did it but we are a bit too long in the tooth now %26amp; like our comfort.If you dont mind the long trip %26amp; a bit of discomfort then go for it,as it really is an amazing place.Cheers Joan

|||

hi, I just want to say in case you haven%26#39;t heard that Istanbul and other parts of Turkey are flooded and it may not be a good idea to make this trip right now.

Going on Tuesday

Me and some mates are going tuesday, cant wait!! hope its busy out there at the mo and weather is half decent, anyone else going next week?

Hotel Pomorie All Inclusive

Would appreciate any info on this hotel please. My daughter and her partner have seen a good deal for AI at this hotel but having never been to bulgaria are unsure if AI is wise would they be better room only or even SC. Also should they take sterling or traveller cheques (their banks charges 2 high 2 use their card)

thanks.

|||

AI in this hotel is not wise as numerous complaints this year about food and restrictions on drinks etc.

I personally wouldn%26#39;t go AI anywhere in Bulgaria although the Rui Evrika does get very good reports.

Have they any other choices of hotels?

If you can get Room only or even B%26amp;B then thats best.

Do not take traveller cheques as the commission charged is very high. Best take clean, unmarked, no rips £20 notes and exchange in any of the banks or CROWN exchange booths. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER or they will be ripped off and never exchange money if approached in the street.

Went to check the hotel out when I was over. A work colleague had booked for later in the season. I spoke with around eight different sets of folk. All said the food was not even close to nearly good. When out they covered up their wristbands as they were getting a ribbing for going AI, and especially at the Pomorie. Sadly my colleague agreed on his rtn.The Hotel is in two sections, older and newer buildings. He did say that it was very clean and tidy for the hotel in general though.

Really if you are booking a hotel, B%26amp;B would do. Food is cheap,good %26amp; portions are large. Just read the reviews for best places to visit. Food can be warm as this is how the northern europeans and scandinavian prefer. Let them know you want it hot and that is what you will get.

Enjoy your hols. We have been 5 times and plan to go back next year

|||

Thanks for all that info have passed it on 2 my daughter an she looking 4 BB instead.

Boltonsunshine.

Our Views

Returned back from the resort of Sunny Beach. Stopped at the Iberostar Sunny Beach for 2wks.

Had a lovely time, sun shining the whole time, apart from the day we came home, when it was freezin and raining non-stop all morning. Glad my hol was just ending and not starting.

Hotel it self was lovely and clean, great entertainment team certainly do a very good job of trying to get everyone involved. FOOD - only eat there 4 or 5 times, not nice at all, not alot to choose from and everythin in sauces or oils and not hot like us Brits like, but apparantly thats the way the Bulgarians serve there food, warm. YUK

RESORT - still very unsure what to make of the resort it self, i never been to a place thats got so many people there, surely a good sign that it%26#39;s a popular place!!!!! You never got a minutes peace whilst walking round every one trying to get u into there places to eat or drink, some of them would not leave u alone even after telling them NO.

Ate out at NEPTUNES, FUNNY PUB, BOMBAY GRILL, MAESTRO all food was lovely and well priced. Be warned carry plenty of lose change around with you, you do have to pay for the use of toilets EVEN in the pubs etc that you are eatin in!!!

Enjoyed a day out at NESSEBAR, what a lovely place this is. Went there in a taxi and came back on the sea taxi.

The beach is lovely, gets very packed and the sea is a lovely warm temp. Beware of the Jelly Fish.

The big question is - WOULD I GO BACK THERE AGAIN???

Yes i would go back to Bulgaria but not in a hurry and i would stay in a different resort.

Just home

just returned home yest after a week long hol in st vlas with my g/f. we spent most of our time in sunny beach and was easily accessible with the bus only costing 1lev and there are numerous bus stops. also taxis are easy come by but always bid them down even though sometimes they drop their own prices in half straightaway

sunny beach is great and it was very lively even for september despite us being told that it was quiet. the majority of bars offer you a beer 1.50 lev although home brand beers are more expensive but still cheaper than home.

along the strip you can get everything from bars, restuarants, fun fairs to the markets which have cheap perfumes, aftershave, belts, clothes etc. the only complaint i would have is that the reps try too hard to get you into their establishments but they are never threatening. the eating houses are amazing and very reasonable - 40 lev would get you a 2 course meal and 4 drinks for 2 ppl! the nicest food place in sunny beach in my opinion is brothers which is close to go go girls. anyone interested in watching football should go to the funny bar - 11 screens and also good for food, they also do happy hour from 8pm to close so 2 drinks for 1!

the 2 water parks are brill and cost 30 lev each which is nothing for a full days fun. i personally recommend the nessebar one.

nessebar is also a lovely resort and i spent a day out there. its a buzzing market town on a thursday with also a great histroy and buildings. you can get the bus out here for 1 lev or the boat if you fancy which is approx 15 lev.

st vlas is also a lovely spot with the marine very eye catching with all its top of the range cars and jeeps. st vlas beach is also very good and the cool n hot fast food houses along it are great for a burger.

all in all i hada great holiday and would give it 10 outa 10 for value and excitement. will book again for next year if i still have a job to pay for it,lol

|||

We must have been there at the same time as our weather was perfect and also had a great time.

Did you ever get to Daks Irish Bar, only about 200 yds from the Funny Pub. Excellent band.

You are right about value, in Condor 6 main meals came to a total of 40 lev ( no drinks )

Looks like another satisfied customer for Bulgaria.

Toonman

|||

yes toon man went to irish bar daks - didnt really like it as being from ireland i thought it was very false. thought wacky paddys was a lot better.

depressing being home

Skiing at Christmas

I am looking to go skiing over Christmas, and wondered which would be the best place to go in Bulgaria. We are 2 adults and a 4 year old. We are all beginners. Any recommendations would be great!

Motel on E79

Anyone out there got a recommendation for a motel/hotel on the E79 around Blagoevgrad?? need something clean %26amp; safe en route to Bucharest.

Quick Question

Hi All, Can anyone tell me if there is an ATM in Bourgas airport or in or around the Majestic hotel???

|||

Yeah there is ATM,s at the airport and all over the resort, check with your bank prior to travelling, as there are extra charges for using the ATM,s.

have a great time!!

First time in Bulgaria / need some tips

Hi

We are a 30yo couple going to Bulgaria for the first time. We will fly to Burgas sept 19th and depart from Sofia on the 24th.

The general plan is to stay 2/3 nights at the coast, then go to Sofia for the remaining days.

The questions I have:

Is it better to travel by bus or by train?

Accomodation offer in Burgas is scarce, but Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Sozopol are all in a 40km radius.

Is the trip to these places easy (finding a bus/train, renting a car)?

Which one would you recommend?

Is there a connection from there to Sofia or do we need to go back to Burgas?

How many of the 5 days should we leave to visit Sofia?

Thanks in advance for the help.

|||

Firstly, Sunny Beach will be starting to close down by the time you visit and I would therefore recommend Nessebar for a couple of nights.

You would have to return to Burgas for either a coach or train back to Sofia.

See here for train timetables/cost

http://www.bdz.bg/

Have you considered a cheap internal flight from Sofia to Burgas?

http://www.air.bg/en

Toonman

|||

If not flying Burgas - Sofia, I%26#39;d vote for the bus.

You may want to consider spending a day/night in old town Plovdiv on the way to Sofia or visit as a day trip from Sofia.

|||

Thanks to both of you for the quick reply.

The train and flights websites are very user friendly. Is there a similar site to find bus information, for exemple the timetable from Burgas to Nessebar, or we just have find the bus station and go from there?

About going to Sofia, travelling by train at night, in a couchette, is a safe option, or should we really avoid the train?

Regards,

Sergio

|||

Update:

Found the bus website:

http://www.bgrazpisanie.com/

Did some more research today on places to go.

Thinking about 1 or 2 days in Nessebar or Sozopol (haven%26#39;t decided which one yet...)

Then bus to Plovdiv, and one day to visit the old town. Then would like to go to Trigrad and around (Devils throat and Yagodina caves).

Found a bus, but it only goes to Devin. And then there%26#39;s only a daily bus to Trigrad.

Only problem here is the shortage of time, and having to go back to Plovdiv because i dont think there is a bus from Trigrad or Devin to Sofia...

I think one solution can be to rent a car in Plovdiv and return it in Sofia.

I will devote some more time to research the rent-a-car options in previous posts, your recommendations will be most welcome.

Thanks again

Sergio

You will find lots of options for buses, minibuses, etc. around Burgas, Nessebar, Sozopol, even the trip from Burgas to Plovdiv. I can%26#39;t help you with info about the places in the mountain, but please keep in mind that at the end of September the weather can change very suddenly. It looked like you are going on a mostly beach/city sightseeing holiday. Will you have the propper clothing and shoes for the mountain? Maybe focus on one type of tourism at a time, go back and do the mountains another time?
