Eden Holiday Apartments and Varna

My wife and I recently spent ten days on another holiday beside the Black Sea in the Golden Sands region of Varna, Bulgaria. This is a lovely area, and we highly recommend it, and all of the Varna region for those wanting a European style seaside vacation. We live in Kiev, Ukraine, so it was interesting to compare this area to Yalta and the other well known Black Sea resorts of Ukraine%26#39;s Crimean Peninsula. It compares very favorably. We found the city of Varna to be interesting, with fantastic and VERY affordable seafood restaurants and shops, as well as some places of history to see. The seashore there is one of the best in Eastern Europe with large sandy beaches (over 20 kms long), and warm, relatively clear waters good for snorkeling and diving for seashells. Temperatures during our stay were 30C.

What we were incredibly UNHAPPY with was the misfortune of our choice of accommodations at Eden Holiday Apartments in Alen Mak Resort Area, Chaika, of Golden Sands. Like most European residents, we travel a lot and we found this hotel to be one of the worst we have stayed in. While the hotel facility was new, we found the ownership and operations to be simply terrible. The hotel is a long walk on a dirty, bumpy (over 1 km) from the beach, there was no ocean view from our room%26#39;s balcony, we were not given an apartment as we reserved, and we were made to pay in full before we could stay. When we found a better hotel for less the day after arrival, the owners refused to give us a refund on the remainder of our stay.

There are many, many quality hotels, many for less money, in the Golden Sands area. We do recommend you use the excellent resources of Trip Advisor to locate one which suits your needs. I wish I had remembered to do so before this excursion.

Sorry to hear of your hotel horrors.

I remember a few years ago when the Alen Mak was described as a hell hole.

As you say too far away and yes there are some lovely hotels in Golden Sands.

For me the best was Iberostar Ozbor/Izgrev, just beside the little harbour..Hotel Admiral and Hotel Sofia also get good reviews.

Thank you for the recommendations Toonman. We will most certainly consider them as we know where there are now in the city.

Yes, this was a %26quot;nightmare on Alen Mak%26quot; visit which almost ruined this holiday which was my birthday gift to my wife. I truly hope visitors to this site %26quot;avoid this so-called %26#39;hotel%26#39; like the plague,%26quot; as the old cliche goes. It always amazes me that these %26#39;resort hotels%26#39; operate like its a nobility entitlement for them to be in business and they are the only one offering rooms in the city. There are many more that offer real service (some for a lot less money) without the %26quot;mafia%26quot; style management.
