We had a great time on our first visit to Sunny Beach.
At first we were a bit worried as the weather was not good and the poverty was in our face straight away when we were approached by beggars (some where children), and we saw a man going through the bins at the back of our hotel. We also got hounded by gypsies in Nessebar to buy jewellery. They tug at your heart strings. Just hope they didnt put a curse on me!
The weather improved but did remain very changeable. We never had a day without a period of being very cloudy or just plain overcast and it rained a few times, but it was always warm.
We stayed at the Hotel Polyusi. It was clean and
comfortable and in a good location.
Our favourite restaurants:
CONDOR BISTRO.
D JANNYS (OF COURSE), BUT IF THEY TELL YOU YOU CAN WAIT AT THE BAR FOR A TABLE DONT BELIEVE THEM iT MEANS YOU WILL EAT AT THE BAR!
VENEZIA (ITALIAN, POOL SIDE OF GRAND HOTEL OASIS)
MIAMI(SVETI VLAS)
IRIS(WHICH WAS AMAZINGLY CHEAP AND WHERE AMAZINGLY WE GOT TO MEET THE FAMOUS WELSH LADY! AND HAD A LOVELY EVENING!)
Worst restaurant:
SALT N PEPPER AT VLAS. TOTAL RIP OFF. AND YES WELSH LADY, YOU DID WARN ME IT WAS EXPENSIVE!
We searched high and low for the popular Billys Bistro but it was nowhere to be found unfortunately.
Trips:
Sozopol.
Istanbul.
Jeep Safari.
Bulgarian Villages.
Khans Tent.
Sunset Cruise.
SB Water park.
We booked through an agent called Camenitza on the main road to the right of Condor Travel. We went to Condor first but the service was none existent. We got a small discount for booking several trips.
We didnt book the waterpark. We just went there on the courtesy bus and paid on the gate.
The Bulgarian Village trip clashed with Istanbul so we went with a guy called Ivan who has his pitch in front of the hotel Evrika(i think thats it). He charged us 120 lev and we had to pay the people who fed us in the villages but that wasnt much. It was great having our own personal guide and we had an amazing day.... so much fun!
Istanbul was amazing, a beautiful city, but a rather expensive excursion!
Jeep Safari was fun but a bit dangerous (dont go to the cave in a thunderstorm! Not unless you%26#39;re very fit and very brave!)
My husband loved the sunset cruise but i was glad when it was over as were the 2 women who very sick!
We had breakfast/brunch, a couple of times at the Fat Cat on the sea front opposite Glarus hotel as we tired of the poor quality breakfast in our hotel.
We liked it there but prices were much like at home. The menu was interesting but we ran out of time to try it in the evening. Shame as they have English type variety entertainment.
We liked the band in the Funny pub and had a reasonable meal there on the last night. The waitress didnt seem to know what she was doing but she was very sweet!
Please be prepared to pay to use the toilets, even in restaurants. It wound me up when people complained about this and refused to pay the requested fee(which isnt much). I think what you pay the person looking after the toilet is there wages!
Life is very hard in Bugaria.
We changed our money at the String on the main rd(not far from Kuban Hotel). Best exchange rate.
Once we settled in, we really enjoyed Sunny Beach and would be very happy to return one day.

brilliant report CindyLou glad you had great time, we were there beginning of June, didnt do as much as what you did but we enjoyed our time there and definetely will go back, i agree what you say about the Fat Cat, nice place but prices similar to home we drank more or less the same bar every night at the south end of SB, The Corner Pub which was cheap and friendly and great people. Only let down for me was also Nessebar which like yourself we were pestered by the gypsy women it spoilt teh day because this was the one place i was looking forward to seeing.

So glad you enjoyed your first taste of Bulgaria.
For interest Billy%26#39;s Bistro is opposite Iceberg Club, very close to the Iberostar hotel.

Hi Cindylou,We have just booked for a week in Sept,at the Yavor Palace.Taking our 4 year old grandson for his 1st holiday!!!Do you advise changing £Sterling in SB,as our travel agent said not to do that, but we usually do when we go to Egypt as rhe rate is better. Its 6 years since we were last in Bulgaria,so I have no idea how its changed. We took travellers cheques then. Many thanks Joan

Hi Welsh Lady!!!!
Great to hear from you! And even better now i can put a face to the name! How lucky we were to meet you that night. We laughed and talked about it all the way back to the hotel that night!
The only thing was i was eaten alive by the mozzies that night and it marred the holiday as i had allergic reactions to the bites and was in quite a bit of discomfort. Came home with a big sore on my leg!
Put me off going back to the Iris cos of sitting in the garden but probably my own fault as didnt spray that night!
Did you go to Cociche? We tried it but were not very impressed. Not a bad meal but nothing special!
Looked for your place in Vlas but only found The Old Mill, next to Salt n Peppers. Was that it? Wished we had ate there as it was much cheaper.
Thanks for answering my question. I am getting off lightly here between you and Carolyn!

Hi Carol,
Great to hear from you! We had a lovely evening at the Iris(apart from getting eaten alive by the mozzies!). Our time in Sunny Beach passed all too quickly and yes we would love to return one day and meet up with you again!
Thanks for answering my question! (Been a bit distracted catching up with friends on Facebook).
Shame we didnt take some pictures that night.
Take care,
Cindy.
